I chose to line the bottom of my tank in most places because it was swiss cheese, and I didn't trust the structural integrity of the bottom of the tank. Some of the holes were good size, and I worried the sealant would just ooze out the bottom and maybe not seal well enough. So that was my thinking. That aircraft sealant is amazing stuff and if your tank only has pin holes or very few of them, I would trust the sealant. It's highly effective stuff, and make sure you wear a good respirator and have a little fan handy to help it cure by blowing air over it. The bilge being the low spot, the fumes easily lay down there and don't evaporate away as quickly as you would expect out in the open. Good luck with your project. It's very satisfying. I am just starting the process of draining and cleaning. I also have some pitting in the aluminum as well although no known leaking I found yet. You said you laid down aluminum sheets on the interior of the tank that were sealed down. I was wondering why you did not use just the sealant without layering in additional aluminum? Would the sealant not be sufficient to seal the pin hole leaks you found? I was considering using this sealant over the pitted areas rather than using the additional aluminum plating. Wondering your thoughts on this, Thanks!sailorboyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13067676141133507269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895969154537909556.post-53698738608074887932023-04-27T13:48:18.983-07:002023-04-27T13:48:18.983-07:00Hi Don,

But regardless of that, I would think you could replace any of that with standard equipment from one of the big companies like Harken or such. If not, any of the rigging companies should have good advice. I've not replaced mine and they appear unchanged since new as far as I can tell. I'm getting near to replacing my standing rigging again myself. It's been a while. When I do I will get new wires and reuse the Haynes Hi Mod I have down below and buy more to go that route with the upper fittings as well.

Good luck. You can also build up that side with a wedge or seam of epoxy thickened with something, which I've thought of doing. Not motivated enough since it works without it. I haven't used Rigging Only since I did Aeolus and am beginning to think about replacing my rigging again. I haven't had to replace the furler on Aeolus and so don't have any recommendations. I have good experiences with Harken, and used them for my traveler, but that's nothing. I'm happy to coordinate with you but won't post personal contact information on this forum as it is constantly used by Russian spam folks. Sorry about that. I hope to meet you sometime on the water! Where do you keep your Gulf? Though they are often abused as live aboards, I find the Gulf 32 to be the best all around cruising boat for our purposes that I can imagine having. Just so capable and comfortable. Worthy of my efforts. They weren't made to a really high standard, but it's easy enough to upgrade them. I had installed a reefing system with guidelines but found it was more trouble than it was worth. I've gone back to simply slab reefing, and it works a charm. I find we rarely reef while under sail, and instead are reefing when first setting sail. So the line at the gooseneck, and the line coming off the lower leech of the sail that pulls it tight to the end of the boom suffice.

I haven't done my standing rigging since documented here many years ago. I certainly found it easy to do myself when I did it, and would do so again using parts from whoever is good to use. Don't know if Rigging Only is still going but they were fine before.

I have replaced the chainplates for the upper and lower shrouds, but not the backstay plates. They will be done fairly soon just out of age, but don't show signs of corrosion. My stern plates rise up a good bit from the stern. Maybe yours are different?

Going to the boat this weekend and will replace our boom topping lift and line. Use amsteel and really love it for being so light and strong in a no-abrasion environment. Good luck with your projects and let me know if I can help with anything else. I thank you for all the information of the various projects you have completed as I continue to update Thetis. We put her on the Hard last winter thinking I would have her in the water this July...wishful thinking. We had great weather for working on her until july and since then it has been a lot of wind and rain. I have the mast down at this time to replace the standing rigging etc.. I was going to use Port Townsend riggers, seems all of the riggers are weeks behind so I'm considering using Rigging Only. would you still recommend them? have you replaced the stern chain plates. On Thetis I noticed the plates could be a bit longer to clear the stern, getting some point loading on the fittings for the split backstay. thank you again, Don KellerDonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02872034252580883540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895969154537909556.post-51906918604119076272022-01-24T21:37:05.985-08:002022-01-24T21:37:05.985-08:00Hi Jim,

Most production boats have aluminum tanks and they will all suffer this fate eventually if not cared for in special ways. The only thing somewhat special to the Gulf 32 is the size and location of the tank. Yes, this was the hardest job I've ever had to do, and yet, it was very satisfying and I now have a pretty permanent fix. By all means, make your own choice, but know that the Gulf 32 is as well built and capable a platform as you need. For what it is, it is a gem. Not for speed or racing, but solid and will get you anywhere.
