Winter Dads get away to Stuart

This past weekend I realized I had the chance to get away from home and do a trip with my younger son. Since my wife and other son couldn't come, I decided to invite another Dad and his son along for the fun. Given how busy and over scheduled people are these days, I was surprised when he said "Yes" so enthusiastically.

Such is the appeal of a sailboat trip in the San Juans. Even in winter.
Happy father and son in paradise

All who read this blog know how much I love our winter trips. To have the islands to yourself, to yourself, and so dramatically beautiful, is just incredible. I continue to be amazed how people stay away by the millions.

Winter trips anyone?
We went to Reid Harbor as there were some strong winds forecast. It was as snug as always. We dropped our trusty Mantus anchor off the public dock and enjoyed a couple days of hiking, reading, playing and eating. Oh, and the deep sleep that always comes from being on the boat.

Our boys are 13 and it was deeply wonderful to see how they go feral so quickly in a wild place. Climbing rocks, trees, running and jumping, just being free. No phones. No screens. Playing games. Exactly the sort of fun they would have had 100, 200, 300 or 400 years ago. If there is anything kids today need, it is this.

We loved every moment. The wind sometimes rose, but we had nothing more than 20 knots for our entire weekend. It was the day after that they were getting 88 mph winds in Haro Strait!

One of the highlights was having the Around the County race go right by us when we were out at the Turn Point lighthouse. What a treat. Such beautiful sails of all colors against the grey green backdrop. And there were sea lions playing and feeding in the kelp at the point. Deep time.

What a lucky man I am. What a lucky and grateful man I am.

"Another dad" here, happily remembering our trip on the water in the late fall! We had lots of good weather, great company, and a very fun boat trip to a fabulous place! Thanks Brian and Aeolus!
